Behind the Music

The song Marvelous Light was written in 2005 by the talented musician, Charlie Hall. Hall has a knack for writing theologically rich statements in our modern day language. Marvelous Light is a perfect example as it proclaims the truths found in 1 Peter 2:9-10: "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy."

In this portion of his letter, Peter is urging the people of God to live holy lives. He writes, "Do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct."

Charlie Hall captures Peter's commands by showing that the gospel has brought the people of God out of the darkness and ignorance of their sin and into the light and life of Christ. Check out the full lyrics below. We are now the people of God and should act like the people of God. We are running out of darkness and into the light!

Marvelous Light

Into marvelous light I'm running
Out of darkness out of shame
Through the cross You are the truth
You are the life You are the way

I once was fatherless
A stranger with no hope
Your kindness wakened me
Wakened me from my sleep now
Your love it beckons deeply
A call to come and die
By grace now I will come
And take this life take Your life

Sin has lost its power
Death has lost its sting
From the grave You've risen
Victoriously

My dead heart now is beating
My deepest stains now clean
Your breath fills up my lungs
Now I'm free now I'm free
My dead heart now is beating
My deepest stains now clean
Your breath fills up my lungs
Now I'm free now I'm free

There's no more shame
No more shame
And now we show the world
Christ in you

Lift my hands and spin around
See the light that I have found
Oh the marvelous light marvelous light
(It's Christ in you)
