Big Idea: God's compassionate love passionately pursues our best interest.
Once, when Hosea was preaching, he was cut short, being called a hypocrite because he was calling out the sin of Israel yet, his wife was a whore. He stopped and left for home. There after some apprehension, he asked Gomer this question: "Have you ever known another man?" As she answered yes, she immediately showed sincere remorse. Though sincere, there was still pain. According to the Law, Hosea could legally turn her out. Yet, Hosea gave her this assurance: "Gomer, I love you unconditionally. I love you despite who I knew you were and what you would become. I will continue to love you, and I will not turn you out...at least this time..."
Hosea and Gomer represent the relationship that God has with humans. God chooses to love us with his covenant love even though we have sinned. God loves us despite the fact that we don't deserve it, even though we mistreat Him, even though we think that we are self-sufficient, even though we don't listen to him.
