Big Idea: An idol is something we look to for things that only God can provide

Ephraim is like a dove, silly and without sense, calling to Egypt, going to Assyria. As they go, I will spread over them my net; I will bring them down like birds of the heavens; I will discipline them according to the report made to their congregation. Woe to them, for they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against me. They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves; they rebel against me. Although I trained and strengthened their arms, yet they devise evil against me. They return, but not upward; they are like a treacherous bow; their princes shall fall by the sword because of the insolence of their tongue. This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
— Hosea 7:11-16

All of us have deeply seeded desires in our hearts that are trying to satisfy themselves. Yet, the fact of the matter is that we are never able to satisfy those desires outside of God.

When we try to find that satisfaction outside of God we create idols. There are three idols that are typically prevalent in our hearts are the idols of significance, love, and comfort. The idol of significance is the need to be "somebody." The idol of love is the need to feel loved all the time. The idol of comfort rears its head when suffering drives a wedge between us and God instead of driving us towards him.

Questions to help find my idols:

1.  What do my thoughts effortlessly go to when there is nothing else demanding my attention?

2.  How do I spend my money?

3.  What do I worry about?  Or, what causes depression?
