Behind the Music
This Sunday, we will sing a song with our church that is all about the church. This song is an arrangement of Samuel Stone’s hymn The Church’s One Foundation. Stone wrote this hymn from the Apostles’ Creed. He was compelled to write one hymn for each of the twelve articles of the Apostle's Creed because of a schism that the Church was experiencing in the South African Church. The Church's One Foundation is specifically authored from the ninth article, The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints.
The DNA of a true hymn text is the metered text. The Church's One Foundation is no exception; it carries a metered text 22.214.171.124.D. The hymn text has been used with many different melodies over the years. The arrangement we are using was authored by Brian Moss for his wedding. It has a very beautiful and singable melody that will make it easy to remember the truths that are so prevalent in this hymn. Also, we are able to see a beautiful correlation: a man writing a melody for his bride and then using it for a text that speaks to the relationship between God and his church, the bride of Christ.
